BOOK

Sustainable Resilience explores a crucial yet underexplored sector of feminist and LGBTQ media practices, that of women’s film and video organizations emerged alongside the Women’s Liberation Movement. These organizations aim to advance, circulate, and preserve gender-focused audiovisual work through grassroots and community-oriented practices.

The book focuses on six of these organizations, founded between the 1970s and 1980s in North America and Western Europe and still operative today: Drac Màgic; Women Make Movies; Groupe Intervention Vidéo; Leeds Animation Workshop; bildwechsel and Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir. Their longevity, quite an exception within the precarious and volatile sector of independent film and video, makes a case for the sustainability of feminist and LGBTQ media.
